Planning a party this holiday season? Go ecofriendly! It will be so seamless, your friends won’t even know. In fact, they’ll probably deem you the coolest, most masterful party planning guru around! (Yes, these ideas are that “cool”.)

Invitations

Scrap the traditional paper invites and go modern. We’re in the midst of the digital age. The digital possibilities are endless! So why not ditch the snail mail and send your friends a lovely e-vite? Because digital opens the flood gates for creativity, you’re guaranteed to get exactly the invite you want. Still working on the savviness of your tech skills? There are oodles of websites that provide e-vite options.

If e-vites aren’t the direction you want to go, consider creating a Facebook event and inviting your friends that way. Because social media plays such a large role in most of our daily lives, it’s a great way to reach people!

We know full well there are people reading this, shaking their head, saying, “Nope. I won’t do it and you can’t make me. An invite is just not an invite unless it’s on paper.” We hear you. We’re not ignoring you. And we’ve come up with a solution for you too. If you absolutely can’t live without paper invites, look for invites that specifically use recycled paper or tree-free paper. And if you want to up the ante and do something your friends won’t forget, opt for seed paper invites. Made to decompose, these invites actually give your friends something they can throw in the yard and let grow. How cool is that?

Lighting

Mason jars are probably the most popular thing in the world right now. That may be a slight exaggeration, but man are they cool! Use the money you saved on invites and buy candles. Toss those candles in mason jars and put them everywhere! Best part? The wax will all melt in the jar, so you can later heat the Mason jar and use the wax to make new candles. Seriously, this idea is pure genius.

If you’re going for a classier feel, try using wine glasses in place of Mason jars. Adding ribbons, sand, jewels, or flowers can also give your party the feel you’re aiming for. Just be cautious of fire safety.

If you’re planning an outdoor party, another cool option is to use solar powered string lights. They hang nicely in trees and if you’re sold on the Mason jar idea, just pop one over each light and you’ve got built-in décor.

Table settings

This one’s easy! You probably already know the solution here: real serving platters, silverware, and dishes. If you’re in scarce supply of these items, consult friends. Another great option is to check out the local thrift store. Often times they’ll have great options at incredibly affordable prices. Not to mention, thrift stores give you the ability to hand pick an assortment of odd and fun choices!

Another options is to give the people what they want! Finger food. Skip the fancy sit down dinner and daunting dishes. Bonus: fewer dishes to wash (and less water wasted). The great thing about finger food is it can be fun and casual or cocktail-ish and fancy. It’s a win-win.

Centerpieces

Use potted flowers, fruit, or even your Mason jar or wine glass candles. If you have other cool trinkets or doodads around your house, add those to the mix. Centerpieces can be as simple or complex as you’d like, but they don’t have to use cheesy paper decorations from the party store. In fact, your custom centerpieces will probably attract more attention and boost ambiance.

Food

Who doesn’t love party food? Plan your menu out ahead of time. Stick with finger food to cut back on the need for dishes and silverware. And be conscious of what you’re purchasing, using, and throwing away. Read our blog about reducing waste in the kitchen for more great info on party food prep. It focuses heavily around holiday meal prep, but the general concepts hold true for parties.
