Safely Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste

Novak Sanitary Service wants to remind its customers that summer is the ideal time to address the dangers that lurk inside your home.

Household hazardous wastes – any material that can harm your health or environment if misused or improperly stored – are in your home and garage. Oil based paints, antifreeze, propane cylinders in the garage, aerosol products, fire extinguishers, and rechargeable batteries in the home are all considered household hazardous waste (HHW).

Generally, anything with these cautionary words could be considered HHW:

  • Corrosive
  • Explosive
  • Toxic
  • Flammable

This summer, Novak encourages its customers to take the time to inventory HHW under the kitchen sink, as well as in the basement and garage, and properly dispose of the unneeded, unused products.

Sioux Falls area residents are fortunate there’s a safe disposal option for HHW:

Household Hazardous Waste Facility
1015 East Chambers Street
Sioux Falls, SD

Website:  http://siouxfalls.org/public-works/environmental-recycling-hazardous/hhwf

Hours:  Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
                Saturday from 8 to noon

At the HHW facility, residents of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha and Tuner counties are allowed to dispose of unwanted HHW and electronics at no charge. It’s a drive through facility for residents only, and not for commercial or organizational use.

Some examples of materials accepted at the HHW Facility include:

  • Ammunition and unexploded fireworks
  • Drain cleaners
  • Flammable solvents
  • Mothballs
  • Pesticides
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Sealants
  • Silver polish
  • Wood preservatives

Novak encourages its customers to take an active role this summer in identifying and properly removing hazardous materials from your homes and garages. Removing these unused and potentially harmful items is good for your family and your environment.
